I thought lisardcrew had a good response, but I wanted add my own comments.
I really enjoy the first few days on a new minecraft server. Maybe it's that constant sense of accomplishment. It's nice to see people working together and even the economic competition can be fun. Having said that, I'm still left with four unpleasant feelings about this reset.
I really enjoy the first few days on a new minecraft server. Maybe it's that constant sense of accomplishment. It's nice to see people working together and even the economic competition can be fun. Having said that, I'm still left with four unpleasant feelings about this reset.
- The "pay to win" aspect of donations was really magnified by the reset. Previously, most of the donations came in over time, so they didn't really upset the balance that much. One more player with an unbreakable pickaxe wasn't going to upset things. However, at the reset you suddenly had a bunch of players with donation items and claim blocks. It created an immediate social and economic structure that, as some have pointed out, created bad feelings even before the reset. In addition, it (probably?) helped get the server blacklisted. At the very least, the donation benefits should have been delayed a few weeks to really give everyone an equal footing.
- The players who were most hurt by this were the non-donating, long term players. New players weren't going to find much anything much different than the old world. Donors pretty much had most of the items they had before the reset. But longer term players who had voted regularly suddenly were without their unbreakable items, their super compasses, and other cool things they had earned.
- The world didn't really need a reset. There was plenty of fresh land available. New players could take part in the economy with a bit of effort. The End being cleaned out was an issue, but it could have been dealt with. Warps were overbuilt, but this too could have been dealt with through a variety of new mechanisms. I someone really wanted a fresh start, all they had to do was to jump through the warp a few times and start over.
- The betrayal of trust that the server was backed up is going to continue to have repercussions. I had considerable amounts of time invested in various constructions. I just can't see myself putting in the many hours of effort again, knowing that the server could reset again at the first disk failure.
