I hope I've never hurt someone like this in the game, although it's possible... if I have, feel free to talk to me. I'm glad this was posted and stickied, Aka, because from the last part of 1.8 to now I've seen issues with players being hostile. I wasn't on Skype till the team build, but I'd seen (through posts and comments in-game) that there were issues being brought into the game from other sources like Skype chats and such. I really keep my head down, so often I'm not paying attention to chat, just working on whatever I'm doing, but even I've noticed a difference. I like all the suggestions here, because brainstorming different ideas will be helpful to answering questions and helping players know what to do in the future if they see (or are targets) of an attack. I want to point out that you have no idea of what the person on the other side of the screen is feeling/doing. This is dangerous in that it's possible to have a predator online, but also it could be someone who's depressed. Just because someone's playing an online game doesn't mean they're not depressed. Do you really want to say something that will make a depressed person WORSE? I do believe there are times when chat isn't shut down quick enough by mods BUT how many times have players complained that mods are silencing them, not letting them speak? It's a tough thing to do a job that never pleases everyone, that whatever decision you make you're attacked for or accused of doing something wrong. This is me speaking from personal job experience. The sad thing is that prob the players that cause the most trouble won't read this, or aren't on the forums. I just wanted to say I'm proud of this thread, and proud of all the players who have spoken up or offered suggestions. Just because a suggestion isn't feasible doesn't mean it isn't good... all ideas are needed. I hope that everyone who reads this thread comes away with the understanding that EVERY USERNAME is a PERSON. They deserve they same amount of respect that you want given to you. I'm sad players have left due to this, and hope that if we as a community can get this turned around, they might consider coming back. Want to help set up community events w/ me?

Personally, I think the easiest way to stop people being disrespectful is making it worth your while not to.
I'd suggest implementing a system where the first offence is a warning, and then a one-day ban for the second offence.
Although harsh, it would: a) Get rid of some of some of the unpleasant players, or; b) Stop players being disrespectful.
If this was to be implemented, I'd want it only to be temporary until player disrespect subsided, or it was clear that these sanctions were not having an effect.

Well apparently there is more toxicity going on from that most recent report.
I really think all mods need to be even more stricter than they are right now on these things. Maybe then people will learn their lessons. Maybe more permamutes they have to appeal for? That way they can still play but their toxicity is cut off from the server? Also by having to make an appeal in order to speak again it would be pretty shameful for them because they will have to be admitting they were acting toxic. This would maybe make them want to avoid that kind of thing again?

I believe no one likes being in the spotlight for doing something wrong so having to make an appeal for being muted would be really embarrassing and this is what I have noticed in the younger grades at my school too is that they avoid doing wrong because they wish to avoid being in the spotlight for doing something bad. Fear of a permamute would in essence prevent a lot of people from doing things that would get them a permamute to appeal for.

One of the things I feel that is wrong and why this goes on is because moderators give far too many chances when it comes to bullying and aren't as harsh as they really should be when it all comes down to it. Sure a warning, mute, kick and small ban attempt to get the point across to the person but that's really all there should be before noticing said person isn't changing and giving out a large ban, there are far too many chances given when it comes to this subject and honestly I feel like the more chances that are given the more leeway the next person thinks they have.
Edit: I understand wanting to keep the player base, but really is that what staff is doing? Sure you keep one person the bully by giving them a lot of slack, but how many people are you losing in the long run by giving the bully's slack. You could be keeping one person and losing 3 without even realizing it. Think about the long term, and not just about keeping one person.
How's the phrase go?
Save a penny spend a dollar?

I'm pretty much a nobody. But I have a lot of thoughts about what's gone wrong here. When I first joined, one of the first things I do for any server is look over their ban appeals and report section. Those two things tell me about the unwritten rules that govern the server. When I started it told me two things, mining for diamonds was a no-no and the mods were gods. Okay, I can live with that. It's simple, clear and straight forward.
What I didn't expect was a culture of fear towards the mods to develop. I've seen the chat attitude increase, I've seen things go unaddressed and bypassed in chat. And no, I didn't bother to screenshot. I rarely talk in chat as it is when I'm on. But here's why I don't bother to report or say much in chat; the rules are unclear now.
Yes, the unwritten rules, not just the expanded rules or the short list rules but also the rules for the mods conduct. Those unwritten culturally understood rules have been shaken and it is those that need to be fixed. The mods need support from the players and the players need support from the mods. This won't happen as long as uncertainty and inconsitisy continues. This all is a morale issue from the inside.
So, mods, please have a staff meeting. Chew out the fat and the issues you all have with each other and the players. Reset the rules, the culture and then find a way forward. By the way, this happens to sites all the time. It will pass and SS will be better for it once it's dealt with. But please consider doing something about the culture of fear surrounding the mods and the rules.

Hi SunSeek. If you are willing, I'd like to pm you to further understand some of the things you are saying here.
To clarify, mining for diamonds is perfectly fine. Very rarely has a player been wrongfully banned for X-ray. In the 13-14 months on and off that I've been a moderator, I could count on one hand the times somebody has been falsely accused. If it was a mistake, the player is unbanned. Past and present mods can verify that extensive checks are done, and in most cases, numerous moderators are consulted to determine if the player is indeed x-raying.
The point raised about mods being gods is somewhat confusing to me. In times gone by, the gap between player and moderator was less. The general relationship shared was a lot healthier, and all round the attitude was more positive. Recentl a paradigm shift in the way things are being handled and player/mod relations has occurred. This is due to a number of factors. All round, toxicity in chat has reached an all time high.Players are being rude to one another for no reason other than they can be. Our attempts to change how things are done is greeted with hostility and negativity. I accept that things are done slowly here, but that's because communicating ideas with one another can be a nightmare at times, and setting up new rules and the likes is time consuming. That being said, patience would be appreciated. We're trying to fix the wrongs, and improve the experience for all players, but it's a two way street.
Edit: I wasn't thinking and pressed post.
The other issues raised in your post I would like to discuss in private message.

Today for example, one player today started attacking a mod in chat. The mod politely and respectfully stated their case. I put in my two cents, one or two others defended the mod, the mod restated their case, which sounded reasonable to me....but the other guy would just NOT let it go. And then another player jumped in and began very boldly insulting the mod...in public chat no less...right after a handful of new joiners popped in.
It's not that the mods have developed a god complex, they want the players to be respectful to others *See rules #1 and 2. Specific players want anarchy and the ability to do whatever they want, including insulting other players and being just downright nasty to others they consider beneath them. That is what at least half of the mod group are fighting against. (I haven't spent any time talking to the other half, so I can't get a read on them.)
It would help a lot if these grievances weren't aired in public chat for all to see.

Ok yeah I think that this had to be dealt with as well, But I think it's mostly the new players that don't know the rules but sometimes there are some of the other members that have been on longer. But with the new players they think that they can do whatever they want, it's unfair they write whatever they want and then just blame it on older players, that has happened to me recently and it was by a new player who embarrassed me and our server on forums, it was because he got banned and I was very upset when I read it because what would people think of me so then I posted twice explaining what had happened and both times it got locked I simply wonder why they didn't delete it because I was very upset but I am going to speak to one of the mods about it.
But some players don't even respect the mods, all of the mods that I know and have met are very nice people and they would help anyone there is no reason for anyone to be horrible towards a mod they only mean good and even if they make mistakes they don't mean it they are just humans like the rest of us.
I hope that our server can became what it use to be ❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🌟

in 1.8 the server was calm respectfull i feel like in 1.10 the server really changed to some very toxic people not gonna name names but i dont think its ok to call someone cancer which kills people every single day. [pls dont correct my grammar] What aiden says is quite true. In 1.8, basically before the reset, I think the players and the mods And people on the chat had a better relationship. But after the server reset, we lost a lot of the old players, and we had tons of new players pouring in, with many staying. I think added to this was that there were a lot of people coming in who really didn't respect the mods or rules as much. Toxiticy levels in chat rose, and with this, much more harrasment has been happening then ever before. Relationships not only between players and mods but also players and other players seem to be worsening slowly. I know I am late on this thread, but it's still an issue. Thank you for making this thread it needs to be talked about.
